With Gratitude on My Final Day

A note of thanks, reflection, and farewell.

Dear colleagues,

Today is my final day with the department, and I have found myself moving through it with a full heart. After many years of working alongside you, learning from you, and sharing in the daily work that defines this team, it is difficult to capture everything I feel in a single note.

What I can say simply is this: it has been one of the great privileges of my life to be part of this department. I am grateful for the trust you placed in me, the patience you showed me, the ideas you shared, and the countless moments of kindness that rarely make it into formal reports but make all the difference in a workplace.

“What I am proudest of is not any single project, but the way this team has shown up for one another—with integrity, care, and purpose.”

What I will carry with me

When I think about what I am proudest of, I do not think first about titles, milestones, or completed plans. I think about people. I think about the way this department has solved hard problems without losing sight of one another. I think about the steady professionalism shown in difficult seasons, the generosity offered to new colleagues, and the quiet courage it takes to keep improving even when the work is complex.

I have watched this team welcome change, carry responsibility, celebrate one another’s growth, and serve with care. I have also watched many of you mentor others in ways that will continue to shape the department long after any one of us has moved on. That is a legacy worth honoring.

A few moments I will remember

  • The late conversations that led to better answers
  • The first days of new teammates who quickly became trusted colleagues
  • The projects that tested us and ultimately strengthened us
  • The small celebrations after a difficult deadline was met
  • The steady support offered when someone needed help, perspective, or simply a listening ear

Looking ahead

As I leave, I do so with real confidence in the future of this department. The leadership, talent, integrity, and imagination here are strong. More importantly, the values that have carried this team through many seasons are still very much alive: service, collaboration, respect, and a willingness to do the right thing even when it is not the easiest thing.

I hope you continue to take care of one another, ask good questions, make room for new voices, and remember that the way the work is done matters as much as the work itself. I will be cheering you on with admiration and gratitude.
