Lab & Technical Area Dress Code and PPE Requirements

Correct attire and personal protective equipment help reduce exposure to chemical, biological, mechanical, electrical, thermal, and contamination hazards. These requirements apply before entering laboratories, workshops, pilot areas, testing spaces, or any posted technical environment.

Before entering a technical area
|
|
|
Always follow local SOPs, posted signage, risk assessments, and supervisor instructions. PPE requirements may change by room, task, material, equipment, or hazard level, so check before starting work.
|

|
|
|
|
Closed-toe, closed-heel shoes are required to protect your feet from spills, dropped tools, sharps, broken glass, and hot materials. Sandals, open-back shoes, and perforated footwear do not provide adequate protection.
|
|
|
Long pants or equivalent leg coverage reduce skin exposure if a spill, splash, heat source, or sharp object contacts the lower body. Shorts and exposed skin increase the chance of injury or contamination.
|
|
|
Clothing must fit securely. Avoid loose sleeves, dangling jewelry, scarves, lanyards, or accessories that could catch in moving equipment, contact hazardous materials, or contaminate work areas.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Wear safety glasses or goggles where required. They protect your eyes from splashes, particles, dust, flying debris, and unexpected releases during routine or emergency tasks.
|
|
|
|
Use a lab coat, coverall, or flame- or chemical-resistant garment when required. These layers help protect skin and personal clothing from contamination, splashes, heat, and task-specific hazards.

|
|
|
Select gloves based on the hazard, not convenience. The right glove helps reduce hand exposure to chemicals, biological materials, cuts, heat, cold, or contamination.

|
|
Closed footwear, leg coverage, and secure clothing reduce injuries from dropped items, sharp objects, hot surfaces, chemical contact, and equipment entanglement.

Additional protection may be required
|
|
|
Some tasks require extra protection based on the risk assessment. A face shield may be required for splash, impact, or high-energy tasks and must be worn with safety glasses or goggles. Hearing protection is required in posted high-noise areas. Respiratory protection may only be used when assigned, fit-tested, and trained. Heat, cut, cryogenic, electrical, or chemical-resistant PPE must be used when the task or hazard requires it.

Hygiene and contamination control
|
|
|
Tie back long hair, secure beards where needed, and keep nails and accessories compatible with glove use. Do not eat, drink, apply cosmetics, or handle personal items in lab or technical work areas. Remove contaminated PPE before leaving designated areas and wash hands after removing gloves or completing work.

PPE is the last line of defense. It works best alongside training, engineering controls, safe procedures, and situational awareness. Consistent compliance helps prevent injuries, exposures, cross-contamination, equipment incidents, and regulatory nonconformance.

Before you start work today
|
|
|
Check the posted PPE requirements. Inspect your PPE for damage. Replace missing, damaged, contaminated, or defective items. If you are unsure what protection is required, stop and ask your supervisor, EHS representative, or lab manager. Safety comes first.
